Quarter Finals - 2 great Quarter final games on Wednesday nights saw the Supersonics fight their way back from 12 points down in the 4th quarter to eventually win 63-59 against Thornden. Alan McDonald lead the fightback with 18 of his game high 30 points (that included 7 threes) in the 4th quarter. Supersonics other top scorers were Tom Parker with 11points and Jim Bradford with 7, Thornden were lead by Olly Marsh with 18 points, Stu Ibbs 15 and Dave Cooley with 10. In the second quarter final the Giants eventually overcame the Southsiders in a tight match. The Giants pulled away in the final 2 minutes to record a 61-53 win. Giants were lead by Ian Hannah 16 points, Sam Sisley 15 and Yaz El-Hakim with 13. Rich Mann lead the Siders with 17 points (5 threes), Dave Mead had 12 and Lewis Johnson had 9.

The play-off Semis between the All-Stars v Supersonics and Barton Peveril v Giants were played on Thursday 30th at Kings. The first Semi final saw the Supersonics, playing without their injured big man Thom Parker, got off to a quick start going 16-7 up at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Supersonics maintain their lead going into half time 30-20 up, thanks to 4 3 pointers from John Jones. The All-Stars then started to come into their own in the 3rd quarter taking the quarter by 11-6 to go into the 4th quarter trailing 36-31. Will Neighbour then scored 12 of his 23 points in the 4th quarter to lead the All-Stars past the Supersonics by 60-49. Will Neighbour top scored for the All-Stars with 23 points, Liam Openshaw 13 and Grant Smith 12. The Supersonics were lead by John Jones and Adam Heath with 16 each and Alan McDonald 9 .

In the second semi final the Giants stayed with Barton Peveril in the first quarter, thanks to some great guard play from Sam Sisley and Rob Eco... and the finishing of Yaz El-Hakim and Ian Hannah. Barton Peveril pulled away to a 25-21 half time lead with Owen Teesdale connecting on a number of 3 pointers and Alan Rutter nailing open mid range jump shots. The second half saw the Giants tire due to the fast pace injected into the game by Barton Peveril and their great team play in the half court leading to open shots. Barton Peveril eventually ran out 70-45 winners lead by Owen Teesdales 24 points (including 5 threes), Alan Rutter 19 and John Wilkins with 13 points. Giants were lead by Ian Hannah with 14, Sam Sisley 13, Yaz El-Hakim and Rob with 6.

The final

The two conference winners came through their semi finals on Thursday to produce a fantastic climax to the WBL season. Barton Peveril Old Boys and the Winchester All-Stars boasted an array of current and former national league talent as well as US College scholarship players.

The first quarter was a tense nervy affair with neither side able to go more than 3 points in front at any stage. When the All-Stars made a move it was inevitably countered by Anthony Rutter who scored 9 of his teams first quarter points. The quarter ended 13-13.

The All-Stars came out with more offensive intensity in the 2nd quarter and lead by Great Britain Under 20 international Will Neighbour, using his 6-9 frame effectively, opened up a 7 point lead to end the 2nd quarter. James Darios kept the Barton Peveril team in it with quick moves to the basket drawing fouls from the big All-Stars players.

Starting the 3rd quarter 27-34 down the Barton Peveril guards started to put more pressure on the All-Stars ball handlers and came up with several turn overs. When Neighbour was benched after picked up his 4th foul the All-Stars struggled to adjust both offensively and defensively finding themselves 60-53 down at the end of the quarter.

Barton Peveril pulled the lead out to 14 points 3 minutes into the 4th quarter thanks to some outstanding shooting from Rutter and Owen Teesdale. The All-Stars came out of a time out with renewed vigour and managed to pull the lead back to 70-60 with 5 minutes to play. Will Neighbour was then reintroduced to the game and the All-Stars started to chip away at the Barton Peveril lead. With 30 seconds remaining and Barton Peveril leading 79-72 the game looked over until Kev Chase hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 4. This was quickly followed by a Barton Peveril time out.

Barton Peveril then ran the clock down keeping possession until a foul from Toby White sent Paul Yeats to the line to wrap the game up. Barton Peveril eventually ran out winners by 80-75 to bring the Winchester Basketball League 2009 season to a close.

The Winchester Basketball League is back for it's third season. We are running a different format this year with 3 teams playing each other over 7 minute quarter games in a 2 hour session. All WBL updates will be made on this page for fixtures, results, scorers and tables.

There were 11 teams entered this season, this is now down to 10 since the Army pulled out, which have been split into 2 conferences:

In the Winton Conference are the 2008 Champions Supersonics, Southsiders, a strong looking Barton Peveril Old Boys, returning, after a year out, Winchester University, along with WBL new comers the Southampton Ravens.

In the Alfies conference are last years runners up Thornden, the Winchester All-Stars, the Giants along with WBL new comers the Polish Eagles and the Badgers.

All teams will play each team in their conference twice and the other conference once. The non playing team, out of the 3 teams involved, will be responisble for providing 1 ref and 2 table officials. Points in the league are as follows: 3 points for a win and 1 point for each quarter won (bonus points) - Max of 7 points. 0.5 each for a tied quarter.
